Gobble Gobble

Just a week away from one of my favorite holidays. All the yummy food and family around the table enjoying each other’s company. I honestly cannot wait for the delicious food. Yes you can make it anytime but it just doesn’t feel the same as when you have it for the holiday. Every time I go to the store and I see all the Thanksgiving food I almost just want to buy them out but I don’t, one, have the money for that nor do I want to take away from others who also want to enjoy the holiday. With holidays right around the corner most aren’t thinking of remodeling or adding onto their home. Really, most want to enjoy their space without it being torn apart or in the middle of being put back together when family and friends come over so we understand if you don’t want to start now. Of course, if you are wanting to start beginning of next year, starting the process of finding the contractor for the work and any needed plans for permitting should have been started a few months ago as schedules are filling up for a lot of contractors. We are even looking into Spring and Summer of next year for scheduling more jobs as we have a backlog wanting to start beginning of next year. So if you are having thoughts about remodeling or adding on and don’t know where to start give us a call. We are one call away at 425-224-2004.

Getting Hygge With It: Your Fall 2021 Guide to the Coziest Wood

Stoves

[realtor.com: Ana Durrani]

There’s nothing like the arrival of brisk fall days to make you reconsider splurging on that wood stove you’ve always wanted to warm your hands over. Or the one you dreamed of curling up next to with a book. Or, let’s face it-the stove you’d love to be napping in front of.

And while plenty of wood-burning stoves are worth the hype, some older models? Not so much.

Wood stove technology has seriously leveled up since the days of “Little House on the Prairie.” Many older styles-notably combustion Franklin models and radiant potbelly stoves-are all but disappearing from the market. More efficient (and way more stylish) stoves are taking their place.

We tracked down wood stove experts to bring you this coy fall guide of the five wood stoves that perfectly marry warmth and design.

Why Would Stoves?

Before we rattle off the list of our favorite selections, you might be wondering what’s so great about these wood-burning appliances.

In addition to casting a magic spell over your entire house and making it deliciously snug, wood stoves can also save you quite a bit of money on gas and electricity bills.

Propane costs have increased by over 60% in the past year, and hearing your home has become more expensive. According to a study conducted by Penn State University, cordwood (aka chopped logs) is by far the cheapest heating option. It’s also the least likely to be prone to drastic price changes.

As a bonus, newer wood stoves offer a roaring fire without the inefficiency and pollution of older models. Now that you know a bit more about what to expect, here is a list of our top picks.

Best Small-Space Stove: Cubic Grizzly Mini Stove

If you live in a tiny home or just want to heat a small space (or even an RV), you may want to consider a Cubic grizzly Mini Wood Stove (starting at $575)

“The best wood-burning stoves ae those that cost a bit more-like the Cubic Grizzly Mini stove,” says Dan Morris of Fire and Saw. “These high-quality stoves will have a much longer life, heat your home better, and cause you fewer problems along the way.”

This little beast throws out an incredible amount of heat for it’s size, anywhere from 8,000 to 18,000 BTUs. The company also sells all the extras you need to get your stove set up-including things like heat-shields, mounts and flue systems.

Best Stove Insert: Osburn 2000

Maybe you want to upgrade an existing fireplace. or perhaps you’re putting the finishing touches on a brand-new build. Whatever the case, sometimes a stove insert like the Osburn 2000 Wood Stove Insert ($2,500) is all you need.

Small but mighty, this one throws off a whopping 75,000 BTUs per hour. It’s also one of the most efficient burners on the market, with eight hours in burn time. (Burn time is the time it takes for one load of wood to burn completely.)

Best Radiant Heater: Heritage Hearthstone Stove

Looking to keep your home extra toasty this winter? A soapstone radiant heater-like the Heritage Hearthstone Stove (starting at $3,899)-might be your best option.

“I’m a big fan of soapstone radiant heaters,” says Jake Dials, a certified chimney sweep. “They retain heat for long periods of time and can radiate heat long after the burn is over. They’re also quite a bit cheaper than circulating stoves, but still have a similar efficiency of 75% to 80%.”

As you can imagine, a stove made of stone is likely to be pretty darn heavy, so plan ahead for extra help during the installation.

Best Antinque-Style Stove: US1269E

If you’re more interested in down-home nostalgia than heat and efficiency, you might consider an antique-style stove like this US1269E from Tractor Supply ($483). Sure, this heavy, cast-iron model looks much like the potbelly stoves of yesteryear. But luckily, it now burns wood way more efficiently.

In fact, this older-than-the-hills looking stove throws off a fair bit of warmth (54,000 BTUs) in small spaces of up to 900 square feet. Looking to make yourself a warm cup of tea by the fire? This stove also comes with an integrated cooktop.

If you’re an ardent cottagecore enthusiast, you may find this antique-style stove ideal for small, vintage-inspired spaces.

Best High Tech Stove: Catalyst

For the best blend of modern tech and high fashion, take a look at the Catalyst wood stove by MF Fire (starting at $4,671). This stove is perfect for heating spaces of up to 2,000 square feet and can provide anywhere from 15,000 to 60,000 BTUs per hour. Thanks to it’s cutting-edge technology, it boasts an incredible 90% efficiency rating.

This fully customizable stove comes in 10 colors (Shimmering Rose, anyone?) and keeps consistent temperatures by pairing with smart technology.
